Makerere Africa Institute Of Sustainability (MAIoS)
BACKGROUND
Makerere Africa Institute Of Sustainability (MAIoS) is envisaged to take three (3) years from 2008/9 to develop, MAIoS will be a dynamic regional academy out of linkages and connectivity stemming from the national hub to be located in Uganda. It will identify, develop and mentor a cadre of leaders in Africa with the knowledge, skills and competences to mitigate the Sustainability Challenge.
Its genesis goes back to the pre-CHOGM 07 Uganda Investors Round Table held in London, UK, in June 2007. This was reinforced by partnerships formed during the Commonwealth Business Forum (CBF) 2007 in Kampala.
It was reviewed at a planning workshop held in London, UK, in April/May 2008, attended by partner Institutes of Sustainable Cities from Thames Gateway, UK, and Dongtan, China.
The Vice Chancellor, Prof Livingstone Luboobi, MUPSF Executive Director, Mr. Nuha Mwesigwa, and other key University officials represented Makerere University at this planning workshop. MAIoS will be developed through a multidisciplinary collaboration of public and private sector partnerships, regional bodies, private sector investments and grants, bequests and endowments, bilateral and multilateral cooperation, community endowments and sweat equity from cultural leaders and communities, local governments, NGOs, and international partners, among others.
