MAKERERE - MAZRUIANA LAUNCHED
Makerere University (Mak) honoured and recognized in perpetuity Professor Ali A. Mazrui, Africa’s illustrious scholar, who is globally recognised as “one of the world’s top 100 public intellectuals” on 11th August 2009. He is one of Makerere’s most renowned former Professors and Deans who credits Makerere for being the cradle of his global scholarship and fame. This was conceived by Makerere University Private Sector Forum (MUPSF) a new initiative established to bridge the linkage between the University and the Private Sector in fostering competitiveness in the value chain.

Planned Activities

Mak launched and will soon inaugurate the “Ali A. Mazrui Chair and Scholarship Endowment” and the East African “Ali A. Mazrui Centre for Global Cultural Studies at Makerere main campus, Kampala”. Both constitute the Makerere-Mazruiana Project (MMP).

Centre for Global Cultural Studies

This will be a multi-storey complex of eight floors constructed at Makerere Main campus. At least two floors will be dedicated to Professor Ali A. Mazrui Resource Centre, to house his entire works and collection in literary and electronic forms. It will also house a comprehensive photo gallery and archives, displays of Mazrui awards, prizes, significant speeches, public lectures and any other academic and professorial narratives. There will be a “Hall of Fame” in the Centre dedicated to all the supporters of and contributors to the Makerere Mazruiana Project. In particular, the Patrons of Science and the Arts, i.e., past and present African Presidents and world statesmen and women—and all others identified by Professor Mazrui as special supporters and contributors, will have a distinctive place in the Resource Centre.

The multi-storey complex will also house strategic faculties and units, namely: (a) East African Institute of Statistics and Applied Economics given its regional programming focus towards strengthening East African Community integration; (b) the Faculty of Arts and its diverse programs with global implications, e.g., development studies, religious studies and philosophy, language and linguistics, literature, conflict resolution and peace studies, etc.; (c) Faculty of Social Sciences, of which Professor Mazrui was dynamic Dean, and its key departments and programs, such as Political Science and Public Administration--Mazrui’s home turf.

The whole complex will have state-of-the-art equipment including latest Information, Communications and Technology (ICT) and other resources for first class teleconferencing.
